AI Chatbot Project

Welcome to the project page for Lone Star Legal Aid’s (LSLA) Technology Initiative Grant (TIG) AI Chatbot Project! We are thrilled to announce that LSLA has been awarded funding to develop an innovative AI Chatbot system, with work officially commencing on December 1, 2024. This groundbreaking initiative is part of our ongoing effort to harness technology to enhance service delivery, improve operational efficiency, and expand access to justice for the communities we serve.

Project Description

The AI Chatbot initiative is a 24-month project aimed at revolutionizing how LSLA provides legal assistance and operational support. By leveraging artificial intelligence, we will develop three specialized chatbots designed to meet the diverse needs of our organization, staff, and clients:

  1. Juris: Legal Research Chatbot
    Juris will be enhanced to handle a wider range of legal documents and queries, ensuring faster and more accurate research capabilities for our attorneys and advocates.
  2. LSLAsks: HR/IT/Policy Chatbot
    This chatbot will streamline internal operations by providing LSLA staff with immediate access to information about employee policies, IT support, and procedural guidance, reducing delays and improving productivity.
  3. Navi: Client Community Support Chatbot
    Designed to empower clients and community members, this chatbot will use branch logic to help users determine if their issues are legal in nature, provide referrals to appropriate resources, and share valuable self-help materials for non-legal concerns.

Through this project, LSLA aims to enhance efficiency, reduce barriers to legal assistance, and ensure that our limited resources can serve more people in need. We are grateful for the support and collaboration of our stakeholders, whose expertise and guidance will be instrumental in shaping the success of this initiative.

  • Topic: Building vs. Buying: Pros and Cons in Chatbot Development
  • Collaboration: In partnership with Lawdroid, we discussed the strategic decisions in developing AI chatbot solutions, sharing lessons learned from our experience.
  • Objective: Highlight the project’s innovative approach, attract interest from other legal aid programs, and explore potential partnerships.

American Bar Association and National Legal Aid and Defender Association Equal Justice Conference 2025

  • Session: Team presentation with LSLA’s Pro Bono Unit.
  • Focus: While showcasing our chatbot initiative, the team will also emphasize the role of pro bono partnerships in expanding access to justice.
  • Networking Goal: Leverage this platform to connect with legal aid leaders and advocates, raise awareness about the project, and recruit collaborators to expand its impact.
