Lone Star Legal Aid’s Amanda Powell Helps Mother Secure Son’s Disability Benefits

For many families, Social Security benefits are a vital source of support. When those benefits disappear unexpectedly, it can truly shake their world. This was the reality for our client, Ms B, a dedicated 45-year-old mother of two, who faced an overwhelming situation when her disabled son’s Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits were suddenly stopped.

Even though she had tried her best, the time to appeal the decision or request continued payments had already passed. This left the family struggling financially while they worked hard to care for her son’s important medical needs.

That’s when she contacted Lone Star Legal Aid (LSLA) for help. Attorney Amanda Powell from our Medical-Legal Partnership stepped in, submitting a request for reconsideration of the benefits decision on behalf of her client. She argued there was a valid reason for the late filing and provided crucial evidence, including a detailed disability report and other important documents from the Social Security Administration (SSA).

Thanks to LSLA’s advocacy, the SSA accepted the late appeal and granted the family’s request to continue payments while the appeal was pending. Even better, the mother received two months of retroactive benefits to cover the period during which her son’s payments were wrongfully suspended.

Now, as the appeal moves forward, the family has the financial stability to continue caring for their son without interruption. This case shows the value of legal advocacy in Social Security appeals, highlighting that help may be available even after deadlines.
