April is Texas Giving Month, a time to help Texas charities recover from a turbulent last few years.
Nonprofits are also businesses, and individual donations allow us to be innovative, provide high quality services, and sustain our work when other resources are unavailable. Individual donations also allow us to help people and families in ways that funders and program designers might not have considered. According to the 2017 State Bar of Texas Pro Bono Survey, “Texas lawyers provide more than 2.82 million hours annually in free or indirect legal services to the poor, valued at more than $564 million (Texas Access to Justice Foundation).”
All year, we – and our partners – rally around issues such as consumer rights, landlord-tenant relations, foreclosures, public benefits, food insecurity, environmental justice, disaster recovery, tax relief for low-income taxpayers, fair housing, domestic violence, justice for survivors of crime, military veteran benefits, mental health, and much more. We work tirelessly to assist the most marginalized and underserved communities in our service area, such as those with disabilities, the aging, the unhoused, and those with limited English language skills.
As the third largest provider of free civil legal services in the United States, we deeply understand the importance of holistically addressing the needs of individuals. Adequate and convenient access to assistance, services, and resources that may improve the lives of millions living below the federal poverty level should always be within reach. Whether you reside within our Texas Piney Woods, Gulf Coast, Urban and Suburban Greater Houston Area, Hill Country, or Southwest Arkansas service area, Lone Star Legal Aid cares about your livelihood.
There are over 2 million eligible people living in our 76-county service area. In 2022, we served approximately 65,000 households.
Closed cases were distributed among diverse substantive areas reflecting our holistic representation of our client community. Of the 27,328 cases we closed…

Our attorneys and staff also participated in nearly 1,000 legal outreach and education events, where they served over 200,000 Texans.
By giving to us, you are fighting the barriers faced by the most vulnerable people in our community.
We’ve helped people like Chester Robey, a 94-year-old World War II Veteran, reduce his property taxes so he could keep his home. Watch his story below, in his own words.
Regardless of financial means, generosity is a part of human nature that we can use to make a difference in countless ways. Donating your time, kindness, skills, and voice are all things you can give in lieu of charitable donations.
