In conjunction with providing free legal assistance, Lone Star Legal Aid strives to seek and maintain safety, stability, health, and well-being; and improve outcomes for children. At the intersection of these priorities lives an ongoing battle against food insecurity. Today we would like to spotlight a valuable community resource that provides meal assistance to families across the Houston area: Kids’ Meals, Inc.
Kids’ Meals is a nonprofit organization that aims to assist families with preschool aged children by hand delivering free and healthy meals to their homes every day for the entire year. Their goal is to feed as many families as possible.
These daily deliveries are made all across Houston to families with children ages 5 and under. Families with a child age 5 or under who live within the delivery route (see map below) get a healthy lunch every day. Over the summer, this program expands to also deliver meals for all children under 17 years of age who are part of the program.
They also deliver grocery items when available, like fresh fruit, milk, and eggs as well as cleaning and hygiene products. Kids’ Meals also provides families with information on community resources and outreach programs that can assist them. Those who live outside of their delivery areas (shown in gray) can still enroll and are able to pick up a week’s worth of lunches and grocery items at their office location in Garden Oaks on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday every week from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM.
Kids’ Meals tries to keep the barrier to entry as low as possible so that more families can enroll. Their application is simple, and the form is available in English and Spanish: https://kidsmealsinc.org/wp-content/uploads/Kids-Meals-Application-2022-2023-Fillable.pdf
After completing the form, families can bring the printed application to the Kids’ Meals office at 330 Garden Oaks Boulevard, Houston, TX 77018 or email it to clients@kidsmealsinc.org. Another option they also offer is to pick up the application from your location by calling their office phone number, 713-695-5437. They include the new families on their routes within 48-72 hours of receiving the application.
