Civil legal aid helps people access basic necessities, such as health care, housing, government benefits, employment, and educational services.
According to Legal Service Corporation’s 2022 Justice Report, nearly three quarters (74%) of low-income households experienced at least one civil legal problem in the previous year. A third (33%) of low-income Americans had at least one problem they attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic. We often receive applications for help where we discover that the individual has several other legal problems. In these situations, we can assist a client in more than one legal case, as long as they meet the eligibility requirements, and the cases are civil matters*.
Oftentimes, as a client is sharing their story, an attorney may realize they qualify for representation in multiple fields. Attorneys can help clients determine their rights, from public benefits to protective orders, and help them categorize their legal matters. These civil matters must be cataloged as individual cases that go through separate processes with separate outcomes.
