Annually in October, Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) is recognized to raise awareness of how organizations can come together to educate our communities and collectively advocate to end domestic violence. Each year, Lone Star Legal Aid (LSLA) takes the time to reflect on where we have been in advocating for domestic violence and representing victims, and where we are going in the movement to end it.
Wearing a purple ribbon can start a conversation, represent remembrance, and even save a life. October 20, 2022 is Purple Thursday, where the nation is encouraged to wear purple as a symbol of peace, honor, survival, and personal dedication to end domestic violence.
In October 1987, the first DVAM was observed and the first national domestic violence toll-free hotline was established. Congress passed a public law in 1989, designating October DVAM.
LSLA is proud to offer services to domestic violence survivors and their families. We can help with divorces, protective orders, recovery resources, and more.
In this latest episode of our Law Talk Friday, Ashleigh Gardner-Cormier and Jocellyn Camarillo of our Crime Victims Unit joined Amy Smith with the Harris County Domestic Violence Coordinating Council to discuss the different stages in leaving an abusive relationship, and the community resources available to assist at each stage.
October is an opportunity for everyone to work together to end domestic violence. LSLA encourages advocates, loved ones, supporters, and survivors to join in uplifting each other during DVAM and years to come.
