Lone Star Legal Aid Honors A MONTH OF SERVICE – City of Houston Department of Neighborhoods for Pro Bono Week 2022

Since 2019, Lone Star Legal Aid has been part of the A Month of Service (AMOS), a collaboration managed by the City of Houston Department of Neighborhoods (DON) under the direction of Director TaKesha L. Francis and Neighborhood Recovery Community Development Corporation (NRCDC) under the leadership of Executive Director Paul Charles.  In addition to DON, NRCDC, and LSLA, AMOS includes the Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector; Harris County Appraisal District; Houston Volunteer Lawyers, the Earl Carl Institute for Legal & Social Policy, and the Houston Bar Association. AMOS provides free education on topics that range from asset protection, asset building, generational wealth preservation, and legal concerns to the communities we all serve.

Each year, AMOS educates over 20,000 individuals via Zoom and Facebook Live streams.  Each month, AMOS conducts a Wills Clinic, connecting eligible clients to Lone Star Legal Aid, who recruit pro bono attorneys to prepare their estate planning documents.  We acknowledge our wonderful partners and are thankful for the day-to-day management handled by DON’s Mayra Hypolite and NRCDC’s Nia Murry.

Lone Star Legal Aid (LSLA) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit law firm focused on advocacy for low-income and underserved populations by providing free legal education, advice, and representation. LSLA serves millions of people at 125% of federal poverty guidelines, who live in 72 counties in the eastern and Gulf Coast regions of Texas, and 4 counties in Southwest Arkansas. LSLA focuses its resources on maintaining, enhancing, and protecting income and economic stability; preserving housing; improving outcomes for children; establishing and sustaining family safety, stability, health, and wellbeing; and assisting populations with special vulnerabilities, like those with disabilities, the aging, survivors of crime and disasters, the unemployed and underemployed, the unhoused, those with limited English language skills, and the LGBTQIA+ community.
