In the Southern United States, 22.2 million people live below 125% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL). Legal Services Corporation (LSC) funds many legal aid organizations so that low-income individuals and families can receive the help they need. In a 2022 report by LSC, known as The Justice Gap, it was found that 53% of low-income Americans “did not know if they could find a lawyer if they needed one.” Legal aid is the solution for many Americans who cannot afford to hire an attorney for their civil legal issues. Legal aid differs from standard law firms in that they provide free legal advice and/or representation. Individuals can apply for a legal aid organization’s services, and if they meet eligibility requirements, an available attorney may be able to take on their case.
