Houston, Texas – We are celebrating our 1-year anniversary of The Safe Space with a video montage of the past 12 episodes. The Safe Space is a live-streaming video outreach series aimed at providing survivors of sexual assault with free legal information and resources.
Sexual violence can have an immediate and devastating effect on the survivor in nearly every aspect of their life, resulting in a need for survivor-centered and trauma-informed legal representation.
“Lone Star Legal Aid, as part of the larger statewide LASSA Network, is committed to providing survivors with individualized, holistic legal services. We are thrilled to provide an online platform for discussion of topics relevant to sexual violence survivors, as well as to the advocates that serve this special population,” says Victoria Smith, Directing Attorney, and Survivor Advocate.
With the pandemic forcing community outreach to go virtual, our Individual Safety Unit started the monthly virtual outreach series via Facebook Live. In 1-hour episodes, our attorneys and partner organizations cover topics ranging from consent to domestic violence, from human trafficking to Title IX, and issues facing the LGBTQIA+, Latinx, Black, Indigenous, People of Color, Asian American, and Pacific Islander communities.
Featured in the series are the 9 Texas LASSA Grantees and many other like-minded community partner organizations.
Texas LASSA Grantees: Catholic Charities of Dallas, Equal Justice Center, Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas, Lone Star Legal Aid, St. Frances Cabrini Center for Immigrant Legal Assistance, Tahirih Justice Center, Texas Advocacy Project, Texas Legal Services Center, and Texas RioGrande Legal Aid.
Be sure to tune-in this week, Thursday, September 9, 2021, at 3:00 PM, on our Facebook page to catch a discussion on Fair Housing and Sexual Assault with our Texas LASSA staff, alongside advocates from Austin Tenants’ Council and Texas Rio Grande Legal Aid.
Texas LASSA is funded by the Texas Access to Justice Foundation.
