Bias Crime: Victimization as a Result of Prejudice

A bias crime is one that is fully or partially motivated against a person’s ancestry, ethnicity, color, creed, national origin, immigration, citizenship status, race, religion, religious practice, disability, gender, marital status, age or sexual orientation is considered a bias crime, also known as a hate crime. Being prejudice or assuming an opinion about someone based on these factors can lead to fear, trauma, and other mental health issues for crime survivors.

Examples of a bias crime include intentional or unintentional acts that discriminate or create stereotypes, exclude, intimidate, mock, degrade, threaten, harass, or harm an individual or group of people.

Human rights are worth defending. We help those that have witnessed and experienced biased crimes. We can help you understand survivors’ rights. If you or a loved one have witnessed or experienced bias crime, you can apply for free legal services by calling 1-800-733-8394 or by visiting our website at http://www.lonestarlegal.org.
