October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Each year, millions of people are affected by domestic violence. This year, the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence’s awareness theme is #1Thing, calling to action the fact that we can all do #1thing and take part in ending domestic violence.
Domestic violence is defined as a pattern of behavior used to establish power and control over another person through fear and intimidation. 1 in 4 women and 1 in 9 men experience violence from their partners in their lifetimes. 1 in 3 teens experiences sexual or physical abuse or threats from a boyfriend or girlfriend in one year.
The #1thing that can change culture is our collective power. Lone Star Legal Aid has made great strides at ending domestic violence through self-help advocacy and legal representation that protects survivors like Hope Jones and many others. Throughout DVAM, we will share more of these powerful stories. By sharing survivors’ stories, we aim to shine a spotlight on the many ways you can support the survivors in your life.
