LSLA’s Military Veterans Unit staffed the annual Houston Stand Down on Friday, October 5, 2018. Over 500 veterans attended the event. LSLA attorneys were able to speak with over 90 veterans and over 50 of them filled out applications for legal assistance.
STAND DOWN is military terminology referring to a brief period of time a soldier leaves an active combat area in order to rest and regain strength.
In 1993 a partnership formed consisting of the VA Medical Center’s Healthcare for Homeless Veterans, the DeGeorge at Union Station, US Vets Houston, and other local veterans organizations; bringing Houston the first Stand Down to service Homeless Veterans.
The Houston Stand Down is open to ALL homeless veterans, male and female, including those at risk of becoming homeless, who have served in the Armed Forces for the United States of America.
In addition to LSLA, other local veteran service organizations joined together to provide free meals, clothing, showers, haircuts, medical screenings, VA benefits, vocational training, mental health resources, employment resources, education resources, rental assistance, dental resources, sobriety resources, housing, and credit counseling.
