Today, we join many of our partner organizations to commemorate the achievements of our past and to recognize the major contributions nonprofits make in our society today.
National Nonprofit Day, August 17th, is a day out of the year that encourages us to recognize the hard work and effort of public servants. On this date in our history, the Tariff Act of 1894 imposed the first federal income tax, but our legislators recognized the need for tax exemptions for nonprofits and charities. Nonprofits are exempt today from taxes to benefit the organizations which provide services for the greater good across the country.
Lone Star Legal Aid is proud to celebrate the hardworking men and women who are dedicated to improving the lives of those living in poverty. We wish to extend a celebratory “hurrah” to other organizations and charities in the public sector who shed altruistic values across our communities.
LSLA’s dedicated staff provides assistance to those who would be unable to take care of their legal needs if it weren’t for our help. By saving homes from foreclosure, providing aid to victims of domestic violence, and supporting veterans who are in need of legal assistance, our men and women at LSLA give back to those in need through a myriad of ways.
We have served more than 10,300 Hurricane Harvey survivors. Hurricane Harvey left millions of people within our service area without shelter, food, and water. Our attorneys scrambled to provide aid to hurricane survivors in disaster relief centers. Our disaster work, among a number of other cases, has kept our attorneys, support staff, and volunteers busy each day.
In the past year, we assisted a juvenile with record expungement, defended the rights of a disabled student to receive a public education, supported a domestic violence victim to achieve legal and financial independence, and cleared up a landlord dispute for a veteran.
LSLA’s tax clinic has taken on numerous cases this past year, including a case for a disabled former high school teacher. LSLA was able to drop the client’s tax liability from $20,000 to $5 so that the client could save her home from a lien.
Your involvement will make a difference in the lives of those who are in need of, but cannot afford, legal assistance.
