LSLA To Host Double Watch Party – Ever After: Stories of Violence, Accountability, & Healing

Houston & Conroe, TX – Lone Star Legal Aid will premiere Common Justice’s series of short videos with people who have survived or committed harm on May 17, 2018, from 5:30 pm until 7:30 pm in two locations.

Combined Arms

2929 McKinney

Houston, Texas 77003

Lone Star Legal Aid

412 W. Lewis Street

Conroe, Texas 77301

The videos will be followed by a panel discussion that will explore healing, safety, and accountability. New York panelists will include Fatimah Muhammad, Khalil Cumberbatch, Donna Hylton, and Mark Levin.

The purpose of the Ever After Series is to:

1) give people a platform to tell their stories about violence and healing;

2) dislodge the old narrative about violence (i.e. what survivors want, who response parties are and can be, or what healing, safety, and accountability look like); and

3) introduce elements of a new narrative which identifies the current system deficiencies and points to what is possible.

Common Justice develops and advances solutions to violence that transform the lives of those harmed and foster racial equity without relying on incarceration. CJ operates the first alternative-to-incarceration and victim-service program in the United States that focuses on violent felonies in the adult courts. CJ leverages the lessons from their direct service to transform the justice system through partnerships, advocacy, and elevating the experience and power of those most impacted. CJ builds practical strategies to hold people accountable for harm, break cycles of violence, and secure safety, healing, and justice for survivors and their communities.
