Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund, part of the Greater Houston Community Foundation, Awards LSLA $300,000 Grant

For Immediate Release

Houston, Texas – Lone Star Legal Aid has been awarded a $300,000 grant as part of the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund, administered through the Greater Houston Community Foundation. Lone Star Legal Aid was chosen as one of the ninety local nonprofit organizations that will provide services to Houston and Harris County flood victims.

Per Harris County Judge Ed Emmett, these funds will aid survivors in  “bouncing back… trying to repair their homes, pay for temporary housing, replace damaged personal belongings, and start their lives over.”

This grant will support the addition of staff to Lone Star Legal Aid’s disaster relief team. These new staff members will focus on assisting Harvey survivors with the legal issues that are creating hurdles in their recovery from the record-breaking flooding in the Houston area.

Saundra Brown, Lone Star Legal Aid’s Director of Disaster Legal Services, explained that “adding staff to the Houston office, specifically for Harvey recovery work, will allow us to assist in the short and long-term legal issues survivors will face, including relocation and transitional housing, home repair scams, insurance claims and appeals, property rights, title-clearing, property related probate and tax problems, and of course – a large number of FEMA appeals.”

The Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund, set up by Houston’s Mayor Turner and Harris County Judge Emmett, is focused on immediate and long-term relief efforts in Harris County and Houston (which may include City residents in Fort Bend or Montgomery County).

The Greater Houston Community Foundation is a public charitable foundation focused on helping donors expand their philanthropic impact. For over 20 years they have partnered with individuals, families, corporations, foundations, and their advisors to extend their giving in new ways, with greater results.
