On March 26, 2025, LISC Houston will host the second annual Envision: State of Communities – Neighborhoods Taking Action at the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas – Houston. This free, day-long conference is dedicated to uplifting, shedding light on, and amplifying the voices of those driving meaningful change in their neighborhoods across Houston and Harris County.
As part of this event, the Earl Carl Institute (ECI) and Lone Star Legal Aid (LSLA) will present a session on preserving heirs’ property, a critical issue for many families whose homes represent both a legacy and a source of stability. Tangled titles, unresolved ownership disputes, and property tax burdens often put these homes at risk. Without clear legal title, families face challenges accessing homestead exemptions, securing home repairs, and protecting against tax foreclosure or predatory lending.
This session will explore legal strategies and community-based solutions to help families maintain ownership and prevent displacement. Topics will include:
Title Clearing & Estate Planning: How proactive legal strategies can prevent ownership disputes and help families secure their property rights.
Mortgage & Property Tax Challenges: The foreclosure risks heirs’ property owners face and legal tools to challenge wrongful tax and mortgage collection efforts.
Community-Based Solutions: How legal aid organizations and community partners can collaborate to preserve generational wealth and strengthen neighborhoods.
Drawing on the combined experience of ECI and LSLA in serving heirs’ property owners, this session will provide practical insights for advocates, community leaders, and policymakers committed to protecting homeownership and ensuring long-term housing stability.
