Urban Heirs' Property: Unique Challenges and Innovative Solutions

Thursday, January 16, 2025
3:00PM - 4:30PM

Urban heirs’ property presents a distinct set of challenges: limited land use, parcels unsuitable for physical division, cloudy titles, and heightened risks of partition actions. These issues, though often associated with urban areas, also affect smaller parcels in rural contexts. This panel will explore strategies for resolving title issues, sustaining ownership, and promoting equitable succession, with a focus on cases where traditional approaches, such as cooperative models or trust-centered solutions, may fall short.

Attendees will gain insights into:

• nomenclature

• The complexities of urban heirs’ property and how it differs from rural contexts.

• Effective strategies for clearing title and preventing partition actions.

• Succession planning tailored to properties with constrained land use.

• Geographic-specific solutions, including cooperatives (e.g., NYC) and combating scams targeting heirs’ property owners.

Panelists include advocates from across the nation, including Texas (Lone Star Legal Aid), Pennsylvania (Community Legal Services), Missouri (Legal Services of Eastern Missouri), South Carolina (Center for Heirs’ Property Preservation), and Washington DC (DC Affordable Law Firm).

This discussion is limited to advocates who are part of the Heirs Property Practictioner Network
