In commemoration of National Pro Bono Week (October 25 – 29), Lone Star Legal Aid honors Baker & Associates with the 2021 Bryan Branch Office Outstanding Commitment to Pro Bono Service in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Southern District of Texas.
Lone Star Legal Aid Pro Bono awards recognize attorneys, law firms and community partners who donate their time and legal expertise to ensure that all East Texas residents have equal access to the courts. Baker & Associates firm Partner, Reese W. Baker, and Sonya Kapp, firm Associate, will be formally recognized on Friday, October 29, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. at the Brazos County Courthouse, in a recognition event hosted by the Honorable Kyle Hawthorne, 85th District Court, with Award Certificates from Lone Star Legal and the Honorable J. Brett Busby, Justice, Supreme Court of Texas. A reception will follow the ceremony sponsored by Lone Star Legal Aid and the Brazos County Bar Association.
Baker & Associates have a demonstrated record of assisting Lone Star Legal Aid clients with bankruptcy filings in the Southern District of Texas. These clients are particularly vulnerable due to their financial distress, and oftentimes are the most appreciative recipients of pro bono services generously provided time and again by the Baker firm.

Reese W. Baker is a partner in the firm of Baker & Associates headquartered in Houston, Texas. He is Board Certified by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization in Business Bankruptcy Law, and he is also Board Certified by the American Board of Certification in Business Bankruptcy Law. He has participated in numerous national bankruptcies, but has always found time to assist low-income residents of Harris, Brazos and surrounding counties with Chapter 7 discharges and debt relief. Aside from his pro bono work with Lone Star Legal Aid, he is a member of the board of directors of Millennium Relief and Development Services, Inc., an international relief organization with headquarters in Houston, and KSBJ, a non-profit radio station in Houston.
Sonya Kapp is an associate with the firm and specializes in consumer bankruptcy cases. Prior to practicing law at Baker & Associates, she was an attorney for David G. Peake, Chapter 13 Trustee in the Southern District of Texas. She has represented clients in consumer bankruptcies for almost 25 years.
Nikie Marie López-Pagán is an associate with Baker & Associates and brings the wealth of a bi-lingual bi-cultural background to the firm.
