April 22 is Earth Day!

The constant advancement of science, technology, and engineering has allowed for global progress, but our planet has endured the less favorable consequences of the process. With each passing day, our duty to preserve and protect the Earth grows. Though every day should present the opportunity to practice environmentally conscious and mindful behavior, April 22nd has served as the official Earth Day for over 50 years.

In 1970, Earth Day came to fruition as a response to the toxic waste and pollution caused by factories. Congress authorized the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to tackle these newfound environmental issues, eventually leading to protective legal regulations like the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act. Since then, Earth Day has served as a reminder to continually modify and monitor our conservation methods and spread environmental awareness. Human beings have a collective responsibility towards the planet we inhabit, and we can more easily sustain it through concentrated efforts.

This year, the 46th administration will hold a global climate summit on Earth Day that aims to take vigorous action against one of the most pressing environmental concerns: climate change.

The Earth Day website currently has virtual events lined up from the 20th – 22nd. You can explore www.earthday.org to register for events, educate yourself on climate and environmental literacy, and find out more about how you can take action.

In addition to their physical outreach at the Earth Day Festival this past weekend, Lone Star Legal Aid’s Environmental Justice team will be participating in the following Facebook Live events to educate and inform the public:
