The purpose of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week is to teach our communities about victimization, the effect victimization has on individuals, families, friends, and the community. It’s also a time to promote legislation, policies and programs that help victims of crime.
Organizations are coming together this April to provide education and advocacy for crime victims. Lone Star Legal Aid’s Texas Crime Victim Legal Assistance Network (TCVLAN) began in 2012, funded by the Office for Victims of Crime at the Department of Justice. The goal of the project was to create a network of victim service providers working collaboratively to help ensure survivors of crime have access to the free civil, legal and non-legal resources they need to recover from victimization.
Lone Star Legal Aid served as lead partner in this endeavor and built a coalition of partners and steering committee members that represented a diverse group of providers. Today, the TCVLAN includes partners all over Texas and continues to grow.
Since 1981, National Crime Victims’ Rights Week has been celebrated yearly in April. Thousands of communities across the country honor those that have established victims’ rights and renewed those rights to help those recover from victimization.
This year, National Crime Victims’ Rights Week will take place during April 18-24, 2021. This year’s theme is Support Victims. Build Trust. Engage Communities. This theme is important for encouraging people to support victims and their rights
