Lone Star Legal Aid Launches Veterans Pro Bono Recruitment Challenge
Lone Star Legal Aid launched a year-long Veteran-focused Pro Bono Recruitment Challenge. We are recruiting volunteers to help meet the dire legal needs of low-income veterans by placing veteran cases with volunteers for representation.
According to a message from Legal Services Corporation Board Chair, John G. Levi, a Department of Veterans Affairs survey of homeless vets earlier this year found that four of the top ten unmet needs were legal– assistance with child support issues, driver’s license restoration, outstanding warrants and fines, and evictions and foreclosures.
Nearly 2 million veterans nationwide are living in poverty. These veterans face legal problems that threaten their basic human needs — keeping roofs over their heads, paying for groceries and other necessities, and receiving necessary medical treatment.
Far too often, veterans are not able to successfully navigate the complexities of our legal system alone and don’t get the help they need. As a result of this, the promises our country makes to veterans frequently go unfulfilled when they return home. This is especially true for low-income and disabled veterans.
“Our veterans deserve more than just our applause or gratitude; they deserve our help and our commitment to ensuring that they have access to the resources they need to fully reintegrate into civilian life,” said Chief Justice Nathan Hecht in his joint Veteran’s Day Op-Ed with Victor Flores, President of the Texas Bar’s Young Lawyers Division.
