Lone Star Legal Aid Champions Equal Justice at National Conference in Detroit

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Houston, TX – Lone Star Legal Aid (LSLA) is proud to announce its contributions to the American Bar Association and National Legal Aid & Defender Association’s Equal Justice Conference, held in Detroit, Michigan, from May 8-11, 2024. The annual event is a cornerstone for legal professionals dedicated to enhancing legal services for low-income communities across the United States.

LSLA’s presence at the conference was marked by insightful presentations from our own Supervising Attorney, Jessie Campbell, and Communications Director, Clarissa Ayala. Ms. Campbell led two critical discussions, “Beyond the Basics: Pro Bono Water Cooler Chat” and “Upcycle Your Pro Bono.” These sessions featured esteemed co-speakers Stephanie Baez from the ABA Commission on Immigration, Lauren Worsek from Lawyers for Good Government, Samantha Howell from Three Rivers Legal Services, Michael Wendlberger from the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada, and Sylvia Novinsky from the NC Pro Bono Resource Center. These talks fostered a collaborative dialogue on innovative strategies to enhance pro bono efforts nationwide.

Ms. Ayala presented technological insights in “50 Tech Tips,” alongside Shellie Reid of LSNTAP, and Angela Tripp, Glenn Rawdon, and Jane Ribadeneyra of Legal Services Corporation. Her presentation “Breaking Down Language Barriers – Empowering the LEP (Limited English Proficiency) Community through Social Media and Legal Advocacy,” with Kristi Cruz of Northwest Justice Project, spotlighted the critical intersection of language access, technology, and legal aid.

The Equal Justice Conference serves as a platform to reinforce partnerships among key players in the civil justice system, including legal aid organizations, nonprofits, and pro bono advocates. Through a mix of plenary sessions, workshops, and networking opportunities, the conference fosters a comprehensive learning environment that encourages the sharing of best practices and innovative solutions to the challenges facing legal aid today.

Lone Star Legal Aid remains committed to the mission of ensuring equal access to justice for all, particularly the underrepresented and disadvantaged communities.
