Houston, TX – Lone Star Legal Aid will join Elijah Rising and Children at Risk for an educational CLE event, including a bus tour generously sponsored by Houston Young Lawyers Association and an anonymous donor on Wednesday, June 5, 2024. This discussion and tour aim to help expose the realities of domestic sex trafficking, labor trafficking, and commercial sexual exploitation in Houston.
Attorneys will get a first-hand look at where major trafficking incidents may be involved. The selection process for stops on the tour involved extensive research, which will be discussed during the tour.
Awareness Director of Elijah Rising, Dawn Gibler, Senior Staff Attorney of Children at Risk Caroline Roberts, Staff Attorney for Lone Star Legal Aid’s Justice of Human Trafficking Survivors, Davina Ugochukwu, and Supervising Attorney for Lone Star Legal Aid’s Pro Bono Office, Jessie Campbell, will participate in the presentation. The one-hour presentation will be followed by a 1-1.5 hour bus tour, hosted by Elijah’s Rising’s Dawn Gibler. There are 40.1 million victims of human trafficking globally with hundreds of thousands of victims right here in the United States. Texas is a leading hub for human trafficking and continued efforts are being made to reduce and assist the victims of these crimes.
Elijah Rising was founded in 2012 as a prayer gathering that focused on ending sex trafficking in Houston. Elijah Rising tours provide a comprehensive overview of the landscape of sex trafficking in Houston. Their hope is that this tour will drive the reality of sex trafficking into the consciousness of our society. Attendees will experience a moving documentary that shines the bright light of awareness to express this issue and compel the informed to respond.
Children at Risk is a research and advocacy organization dedicated to addressing the root causes of poor public policies affecting children. This organization has grown to become known statewide, impacting children in Texas and driving change for over 30 years. They work on a range of children’s issues, including education, parents and family wellbeing, health and nutrition, immigration, and the fight to end human trafficking.
