Every October, the United States takes a stand against intimate partner violence in observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Advocates wear purple, survivors tell their stories, neighbors share their resources, and social media arranges an open forum for activists to educate the world. Join Lone Star Legal Aid this October in powering up against domestic violence.
Domestic violence was a silent but rampant and prevalent pandemic before the Coronavirus took over, which has increased violence in homes for both adults and children. Even as lockdown restrictions were lifted, the abuse has not ended. Our current health pandemic is a critical time for victims, but with the proper education, awareness, and bystander intervention, we can help those during these exceptional times.
Public awareness campaigns like Domestic Violence Awareness Month aids in educating the public about specific issues related to domestic violence. This annual campaign not only promotes its existence but gets the conversation started on how survivors and advocates can be heard, what new legislation should be proposed, what resources are available, and how to inspire social change which encourages people to change their actions.
This month Lone Star Legal Aid is campaigning and supporting this cause by writing a blog series on several domestic violence topics from planning and prevention, listening to survivors to learning about what you can do to be an advocate. You can read the blog series throughout October on the website and also find the links posted on all social media platforms.
Stay tuned next week for Part I of our DV blog series!
